Parading in the

Sydney Mardi Gras float

Client: Transport for NSW

Sydney's Mardi Gras is an annual LGBTQIA+ festival attracting around 500,000 people, celebrated with a vibrant parade on Oxford Street, cultural events, and parties, showcasing diversity, inclusion, and pride. Transport for NSW attends the parade each year to celebrate acceptance and inclusivity on their public network across New South Wales.

The objective

Transport for NSW aimed to design a visual identity for their parade float that would showcase their commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community. They seek to proudly connect friends, families, lovers, and communities throughout NSW, while fostering environments where LGBTQIA+ individuals feel safe, supported, and connected across their workplaces and transport network nationwide.

The solution

Design a symbol and graphic that effectively conveys Transport for NSW's commitment to connecting all of New South Wales. This concept integrates the familiar train lines shaped to outline the state of NSW, infused with the vibrant colours traditionally associated with the LGBTQIA+ community. This design serves as a unique emblem for their Mardi Gras float, celebrating inclusivity and community pride.

The outcome
  • Television viewership: the parade was watched by around 500,000 viewers on ABC TV with a feature spotlight and callout given to Transport for NSWs float. It was the highest-rated program of the night.
  • In-person attendance: approximately 250,000 spectators
  • Participants: approximately 12,000 individuals
  • Floats: approximately 200 floats
