Developing a safety rating
system for child car seats
Whenever children are in a car, they must be safely buckled in child car seats suitable for their age and size. The Child Restraint Evaluation Program provides independent, consistent information to help parents choose safe car seats.
The objective
Make it easy for parents and carers to pick the right car seat fit for their child. Develop a visually clear rating system that is compact enough to fit on small swing tags, addressing ratings for both 'levels of protection' and 'ease of use' across three chair categories: 'rear facing,' 'forward facing,' and booster seats.
The solution
Design minimal, recognisable icons for the three chair categories: 'rear facing,' 'forward facing,' and booster seats. Use a gold and silver colour coding system that aligns with the brand’s palette, symbolising quality and distinguishing 'levels of protection' and 'ease of use.' Limit the rating scale to a simple 1-5 star system, where each star represents protection or ease, ensuring the information remains concise and easy to interpret.
